Thino Web--Known Issues

Why Does Thino Have an Independent Web Version

  • Considering the feedback from many users during the local plugin version’s internal testing and public testing phases, there were concerns about the slow startup speed when launching Obsidian as a host and the desire for a more lightweight option.
  • Taking into account that some users may move away from Obsidian and use other note-taking software, the Web version can be better integrated into other software.
  • Considering that using the Web version is more convenient when changing phones or using temporary devices.

Design Philosophy

  1. Convergence: Strive to maintain as much similarity as possible in terms of functionality and usage between the two different versions.
  2. Differences: Due to the significant differences between local and Web environments, there may be different technical implementations between the two versions.
  3. Experimentation: Faced with some immature experiences in the local version, we may not choose to immediately align the Web version or make them the same. Instead, we will wait for more user feedback and testing before making decisions.

Implementation

  1. At the code level, the Web version uses some code from the usememos project and has been authorized by the usememos project team. PKMer is also a supporter of the usememos project.
  2. For core aspects such as the editor, renderer, user data storage, writing, and other unique experiences provided by Thino, they have been jointly completed by PKMer and collaborating authors. This has resulted in a code-level separation from the usememos project.

To address the issue of external content entering Thino, the current plan includes at least:

Using an external server implementation will make it easier to address these content pathways.

Usage

  1. Almost all functions are the same as the local version, with consistent operation experiences.
  2. Some counting rules and display formatting styles may be slightly different, including some aesthetic elements.
  3. You can refer to the user experience of the Thino local version to use the Web version completely.
